Beconase Hayfever contains a corticosteroid called beclometasone dipropionate. This has an anti-inflammatory action. Corticosteroids must be used regularly, every day, for maximum effect. Beconase Hayfever works by reducing swelling and irritation in the nose and so helps to relieve uncomfortable symptoms.

Beconase Hayfever can be used any time in the year to prevent and treat the common symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including hayfever, such as sneezing and a runny, itchy or blocked-up nose. Allergic rhinitis can be brought on by different 'triggers', such as pollen, cats, dogs, horses, house dust etc. When your nose is cleared the pressure and pain around the nose and eyes is also reduced. Beconase Hayfever can be used by adults aged 18 or over.

Before you use Beconase Hayfever:
Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant?
Are you breast-feeding a baby?
Are you allergic to any of the ingredients?
Do you have an infection in your nose?
Have you recently been treated with a steroid injection, or taken steroid tablets for a long time?

If the answer to any of these questions is YES, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Beconase Hayfever.

Using your nasal spray
Follow the instructions shown in the leaflet. If you have any problems ask your pharmacist.
Use only in your nose. Make sure you don't get the spray in your eyes.

Dose
Adults aged 18 or over: Two sprays into each nostril every morning and evening. Beconase Hayfever is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Shake before use. Beconase Hayfever quickly starts to reduce inflammation and swelling in your nose, although it may take 2 or 3 days to build up to its maximum protective effect. Therefore, to prevent the onset of symptoms start to use Beconase Hayfever two or three days before exposure to one of your usual 'triggers'. Once your symptoms have improved, you may be able to reduce the dose to one spray into each nostril every morning and evening. If your symptoms get worse again, return to a dose of two sprays into each nostril every morning and evening. Try to use the lowest dose that controls your symptoms. Do not use more than 8 sprays (400 micrograms) in a day. If your symptoms have not improved after 14 days consult your doctor. Do not use this product continuously for more than 3 months without consulting your doctor. If you miss a dose just take the next dose when it is due. Tell your doctor if you accidentally use more than you should.

Is a corticosteroid like other sorts of steroids?
The word steroid describes the chemical “shape” of a wide variety of medicines and chemicals. They have many different actions and uses. Corticosteroids counter inflammation in the body and are all based on the body’s own anti-inflammation substance - cortisol. Corticosteroids are completely different in their action from anabolic steroids and sex hormones.

Aren’t corticosteroids very powerful drugs?
Some corticosteroids, especially when given by mouth or by injection, are among the most powerful tools doctors have in combating a wide variety of conditions. However, there is a vast difference in the doses used in nasal sprays and corticosteroid tablets. Because the dose in Beconase Hayfever is applied only where it is needed, only an extremely small amount of active medicine is required. The safety of the ingredients in Beconase Hayfever has been shown over several decades of use as a prescription medicine in millions of patients. It is this safety record that has allowed it to be made available over-the-counter in chemists and supermarkets.
