Just as the immune system protects the whole body so its excessive reaction - allergy - can show itself in different ways throughout the body.

One of the most common forms of allergy is provoked by tiny particles suspended, unseen, in the air that we breathe. This condition, whose proper name is allergic rhinitis, is the main topic dealt with within Allergy Answers.

What triggers airborne allergy?
How to cope with airborne allergy?

Allergy can play a part in causing asthma, a condition that affects the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. In someone with asthma, these airways are sensitive and inflamed. Exposure to a trigger makes the airways become narrower producing asthma symptoms - coughing (the most common symptom), wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. Asthma should be assessed and treated by a doctor. If you are concerned about asthma, you should consult your own doctor. Further information about asthma can be found at the National Asthma Campaign website.

Allergy can affect the skin in two main ways. Insect bites and other allergic reactions can produce localised redness and swelling eg. hives or nettle rash. More widespread allergy can lead to a flare-up of eczema or dermatitis.

Food allergies range in severity from mild reactions such as hives to full-blown life threatening reactions (anaphylactic shock) - a condition that requires emergency medical attention. If you feel you have a food allergy, you should consult your doctor.
